Welcome to Baden-Wurttemberg!
In the southwest of Germany, in the direct vicinity of Switzerland and France and centrally in Europe lies the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Lovingly called "Ländle" by us. Hardly any other region in Europe offers such a large variety of landscapes, such an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, castles and palaces in abundance and at the same time such an innovative industry that ensures our prosperity and its equals in Europe. Around 11 million people live in Baden-Wurttemberg and we are all pleased that we are able to record so many overnight stays by foreign guests with us every year. There is so much to see, to experience and to discover that we have already put together a small selection of different topics for you, which we are gradually expanding. We are also happy to work out your individual travel programme for Baden-Wurttemberg according to your wishes.
We would be pleased if you are our guest!

Our landscape

While the Black Forest and the Rhine plain dominate the landscape in the west, Lake Constance lies in the south with a magnificent view of the Alpine panorama opposite. The Swabian Alb with the UNESCO Geopark and the Biosphere Reserve in the middle of the country and in the north the Hohenlohe Plain form unique landscapes and offer an incredible variety to discover.

Around 40 percent of Baden-Wurttemberg is covered with forest and large contiguous forest areas such as the Black Forest, the Swabian Forest or the Odenwald shape the landscape and invite you to countless outdoor activities. The highest elevation of the country is the Feldberg in the southern Black Forest with 1,493 meters and the lowest point of the country is near Mannheim with 85 meters above sea level. At 1,015 metres, Lemberg is the highest mountain in the Swabian Alb.

Numerous rivers cross the country and with the confluence of Brigach and Breg near Donaueschingen they form the Danube. It is about 2,800 kilometres from here to the mouth of the Black Sea. This makes the Danube the second longest river in Europe after the Volga.

Several climatic zones run through the country and thus one can often still ski on the heights of the Black Forest during the day in the spring, while one can sit afterwards only 50 kilometers further, in Freiburg in Mediterranean ambience comfortably outside with coffee or dinner.

Lake Constance, our "Swabian Sea", with its water surface of 536 square kilometres and a depth of up to 251 metres is the largest and at the same time deepest lake in Germany. Here you can enjoy Mediterranean flair in a particularly beautiful cultural landscape, countless sights and not to forget the island of Mainau with its magnificent gardens. It is also not far from here to our neighbours in Austria and Switzerland.

Our people
People full of ideas, inventiveness and diligence live in the "Ländle". Their creativity and creative power, their knowledge and skills and their commitment to business, science, education, culture and society have made the German Southwest to one of the most successful regions in the world.
Some people say that the people living here are something a bit specific restrained and economical. That may be so, but we know what we are doing and what we have, but we don't like to show it to outside. Maybe that is the secret of our success...?
That's why we don't work, but "create" and that's why we do it best from morning till evening.
People like to say that the "Ländle" is the land of poets and thinkers. Friedrich Schiller, Hermann Hesse, Wilhelm Hauff and many others were born here.
But to speak High German is not so much our strength ... others can do that better. But we make every effort to ensure that our guests can understand us well.
Several, very pronounced dialects give us the opportunity to express many things more precisely and thus create a special identity to our region. Often, expressions even vary from place to place.
In northern Baden-Wurttemberg, Franconian dialects are spoken with Kurpfälzisch and Hohenlohisch. The Alemannic dialects Badisch and Swabian are the largest language group and are widespread in the southern part of the state.
About 12% of our inhabitants have foreign roots, most of them originally from Italy and Greece.

Our industry
Baden-Wurttemberg is one of the strongest economic regions in Europe. Characterized by numerous medium-sized companies, a particularly large number of innovative people live here. Nowhere else in Europe are so many patents registered as with us.
Yes, it's true, we do a lot of work, but we lovingly call it "creating". So it's no wonder that very important inventions were made here that have made our lives worldwide.

Without Carl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Robert Bosch there would be no car today
Without Karl Freiherr Drais von Sauerborn we could not cycle
Without Albert Einstein, who was born in Swabia, we would probably have learned nothing about the theory of relativity.

Then there are a lot of things like the electric drill, plastic dowels, all-purpose glue, matches, chainsaw etc., etc., all invented in Baden-Wurttemberg.

And: If Carl Lämmle, who comes from Upper Swabia, hadn't founded the legendary Universal Studios, the dream factory Hollywood wouldn't exist today.
